Oceana Metals Doubles Rigs to Four, Speeding Serra Negra Rare Earths Results
Key Takeaways
- Oceana now has three diamond rigs drilling at Serra Negra with a fourth arriving this week, doubling capacity within a month of the ~20,000m program starting.
- The Central target covers roughly 1.5km x 1.5km, anchored by historical intercepts of 50m at 4.0% TREO (LG42) and 22m at 4.7% TREO (LG26).
- Known REE mineralisation exceeds 4.5sqkm, and the confirmed footprint extends beyond 1.5km of strike.
- Assays from 45 historical holes and aeromagnetic results are due in October 2026, with maiden program assays throughout Q4 2026.
- About $18m in cash funds the program, while a maiden Mineral Resource Estimate is flagged only for the coming months with no size given.
Four rigs now turning at Serra Negra Central REE target
Oceana Metals (ASX:OCN) has deployed a third diamond rig at Serra Negra, operated by Energold and drilling since 7 October 2026, with a fourth rig expected to arrive this week. The additions double capacity for the rare earths drilling program in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
All four rigs will focus on the Central rare earth element (REE) target. The ramp-up came within a month of the maiden ~20,000m diamond program starting in early September 2026, and the company says it is ahead of its indicative timetable. For investors, more rigs mean data should reach the market faster on the path to a maiden Mineral Resource Estimate.
Key figures from the update:
- 4 rigs to be focused on the Central REE target
- 5 holes for 542m completed as at 8 October
- ~$18m in cash
- 45 holes (~4,750m) of historical re-assays pending

Why the Central target is the priority
The Central target is a priority area of roughly 1.5km x 1.5km, defined after re-sampling of historical drill core confirmed high-grade REE mineralisation. Here is what that core showed.
High-grade historical intercepts
TREO stands for total rare earth oxides, the standard way of reporting combined rare earth grades. These grades were previously released in the 9 July 2026 and 17 September 2026 announcements, and this update contains no new Exploration Results.
| Hole | Intercept | Mineralised zone to EOH |
|---|---|---|
| LG42 | 50m @ 4.0% TREO from 53m | 114m @ 2.3% TREO |
| LG26 | 22m @ 4.7% TREO from 101m (partial intercept) | 84m @ 2.1% TREO |
EOH means end of hole, so the mineralised zones run to the bottom of each drill hole. LG42 and LG26 sit about 300m apart, and recent re-assay results have extended the confirmed mineralised footprint to more than 1.5km of strike within the Central target.
The 17 September 2026 results also doubled the known area of REE mineralisation to more than 4.5sqkm.
Drill design
Holes are planned on a nominal 100m spacing and drilled vertically to an approximate depth of 150m. They are designed to test the extent and continuity of the weathered carbonatite units that host the REE mineralisation.
Core is taken to the company’s facility at Patrocínio, where it is logged, photographed, cut and sampled. Assay results from the maiden program are expected throughout Q4 2026.
What is a maiden Mineral Resource Estimate?
A Mineral Resource Estimate is a formal calculation of the tonnes and grade of mineralisation in the ground, built from drilling data. “Maiden” simply means it is the first one for the project.
It matters because it is the step that turns exploration results into a quantified asset. The historical core was drilled earlier, so the new holes are designed to generate a modern geological and geochemical dataset capable of supporting resource estimation.
The announcement does not give a resource size, and results from drilling do not guarantee one.

Catalysts and timetable ahead
Oceana describes the coming period as one of sustained news-flow. Three items stand out:
- Historical re-assays: all 68 available historical drill holes have been re-sampled, with assays pending from 45 holes (~4,750m). Further results will inform the prioritisation of district-scale drill targets.
- Aeromagnetic survey: the drone survey flown by Avant Geofísica (1,304 line kilometres at 50m line spacing) is complete, and inversion modelling is well advanced. The results are expected to help guide regional drill planning beyond the Central target.
- Maiden program assays: results from Oceana’s own drilling are expected throughout Q4 2026.
| Event | Timing |
|---|---|
| Mobilisation of fourth drill rig to site | This week |
| Further historical core re-sampling assay results | October 2026 |
| Aeromagnetic survey interpretation and inversion modelling results | October 2026 |
| Assay results from maiden Oceana-led drilling program | Throughout Q4 2026 |
| Maiden Mineral Resource Estimate for Serra Negra | Coming months |
The company states the timetable is indicative only and subject to change.
Funding and corporate
Oceana reports approximately $18m in cash, based on A$8.16m as at 30 June 2026 plus a further A$12.6M (before costs) received from Tranche 2 of the Placement in July 2026.
Completion of the acquisition of Songeo Mineração S.A. is expected imminently, with both parties working on satisfying the remaining conditions precedent.
With four rigs drilling and several result releases due, the weeks ahead look busy for Serra Negra.
