Strategic Energy Resources Drills Untested Coral Trout Target With Sumitomo Funding

Diamond drilling is now turning at Coral Trout, where Strategic Energy Resources Bulimba Gold Drilling puts a 1,000m x 700m untested target under the bit, fully funded by Sumitomo Metal Mining and a Queensland grant.
By William Hadrian -
  • Diamond drilling has started at the Coral Trout Prospect, a previously untested 1,000m x 700m reversely magnetised target in the Bulimba Gold Project, NE Queensland.
  • The single 600m hole is fully funded by Sumitomo Metal Mining Oceania under its JV with SER and backed by a $137,500 Queensland Government grant, so SER isn't paying from its own balance sheet.
  • Drilling should take about 10 days, with assays due roughly six weeks after completion, so no results have been reported yet.
  • Nearby Mungana and Red Dome hold a combined 2.7Moz Au, 273kt Cu and 34Moz Ag, giving the corridor real pedigree.
  • Canobie assays are due in November, and the rig then moves to the 100%-owned Diamantina Copper-Gold Project, so news flow continues across three Queensland projects.
Summarise with AI:

Diamond drilling has started at the Coral Trout Prospect, part of the Bulimba Gold Project in NE Queensland, according to an 8 October 2026 announcement from Strategic Energy Resources (ASX:SER). Two geophysical programs, airborne gravity gradiometry and passive seismic, are now complete.

The drilling is described as fully funded under SER’s Farm-In and Joint Venture with Sumitomo Metal Mining Oceania Pty Ltd (SMMO), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. Ltd. It is also supported by a $137,500 Queensland Government Collaborative Exploration Initiative (CEI) grant.

Key highlights

  • Diamond drilling is underway at the high-priority Coral Trout Prospect.
  • Coral Trout is a previously untested target defined by a 1,000m x 700m reversely magnetised feature.
  • Airborne gravity gradiometry (AGG) and passive seismic surveys are complete, providing new datasets for ongoing target generation.
  • The program follows completed diamond drilling at the Canobie Project.

For shareholders, the key point is that an untested target is being drilled with partner funding. That may limit dilution risk, because SER is not paying for this hole from its own balance sheet.

Coral Trout: a 1,000m x 700m untested target

Target setting

Coral Trout is a reversely magnetised feature near the intersection of NE-trending regional faults and the Gamboola Fault Zone. The project sits approximately 50km north-west of Chillagoe and covers undercover extensions of the Palmerville/Gamboola Fault Zone.

The Bulimba licence package spans four exploration licences across roughly 1,315km2 of northeast Queensland, giving the Coral Trout hole a much larger corridor of undercover ground to build on if results are encouraging.

SER interprets the location as the intersection of a mapped translithospheric structure, which is a fault system cutting deep through the crust, interpreted as a fluid conduit. A potentially concealed Kennedy Igneous Association felsic intrusion is interpreted to have emplaced into a dilational structural zone, which is an area where the rock has pulled open.

The wider fault zone hosts multiple Au-Cu (Ag-Pb-Zn) deposits. The nearby Mungana and Red Dome deposits have a combined resource of 2.7Moz Au, 273kt Cu and 34Moz Ag.

Drill plan

Item Detail
Planned hole Single hole, 600m
Target size 1,000m x 700m
Modelled top of magnetic body Approximately 225m below surface
Expected duration Approximately 10 days
Assays Expected a further six weeks after drilling completes

The hole is the first test of a highly prospective segment of the Palmerville-Gamboola corridor. No assays are reported in the announcement.

Dr David DeTata, Managing Director

“…it is exciting to have the diamond drill rig now turning at Coral Trout – a compelling target that sits in a highly prospective but largely concealed geological setting.”

What is an intrusion related gold system?

An intrusion related gold system (IRGS) is a gold deposit linked to magma that has pushed up into the crust and cooled as an intrusion. These systems can be hidden beneath younger rock or soil, known as cover.

Because explorers cannot see through cover, they use geophysics to spot clues. Magnetic surveys detect variations in rock magnetism, gravity surveys detect differences in rock density, and seismic surveys map the depth to basement rock.

Coral Trout is a first test of this idea. Results could help define whether Bulimba warrants follow-up, but the hole is a test of a target, not a discovery.

Geophysics, JV terms and what’s next

New datasets

  • Airborne gravity gradiometry: approximately 2,332 line kilometres flown at 500m line spacing, completed in early September.
  • Passive seismic: 124 stations across six traverses, including over Coral Trout. Modelling and interpretation will be completed once final data is received.

Together, these surveys are designed to improve gravity resolution across the project and map depth to basement, informing future drill targeting.

JV terms (SMMO)

The Exploration Joint Venture Agreement covers four exploration licences. Key terms include:

  1. SMMO must commit a minimum of $600,000 in the first 12 months before it can withdraw, in which case SER retains 100% of the Project.
  2. First earn-in: SMMO can earn an initial 51% through $3M of expenditure over three years, including a minimum of 2,500m of drilling.
  3. Second earn-in: SMMO can earn up to 80% through a further $3M over two years, including a minimum of 5,000m of drilling in addition to the first 2,500m.
  4. Third earn-in: SMMO can earn up to 90% upon completion of a Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) on a >1Moz AuEq resource during a 5-year period.
  5. SER is free carried until SMMO enters the pro-rata expenditure period, and manages and operates the JV, receiving a 10% Operator fee on all exploration expenditure.

Dr DeTata said SMMO is committing more than $1 million for on-ground exploration at Bulimba this year.

Pipeline

Diamond drilling at the Canobie Project is complete, with two holes drilled. Core logging and processing is underway, and assays are expected in November.

After Bulimba, the rig is scheduled to move to SER’s 100%-owned Diamantina Copper-Gold Project, 280km south of Cloncurry. A diamond drill program there has been designed to extend known high-grade mineralisation intersected in historical drilling.

Management describes Bulimba as the second leg of its 2026 field season, aiming to maintain exploration momentum across three Queensland projects. For you as an investor, the next data points are the Canobie assays and, later, the Coral Trout results, none of which have been reported yet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an intrusion related gold system?

An intrusion related gold system (IRGS) is a gold deposit linked to magma that pushed up into the crust and cooled as an intrusion. These systems can be hidden under younger rock or soil, so explorers rely on geophysics to find them.

What is Strategic Energy Resources drilling at the Bulimba Gold Project?

SER has started diamond drilling at the Coral Trout Prospect, testing a 1,000m x 700m reversely magnetised feature with a single planned 600m hole. The project is in NE Queensland, about 50km north-west of Chillagoe.

Who is funding the Coral Trout drilling?

The drilling is fully funded under SER's Farm-In and Joint Venture with Sumitomo Metal Mining Oceania Pty Ltd. It is also supported by a $137,500 Queensland Government Collaborative Exploration Initiative grant.

When will Coral Trout drill results be released?

Drilling is expected to take about 10 days, with assays due roughly six weeks after drilling completes. Canobie Project assays are expected earlier, in November.

What can Sumitomo earn in the Bulimba joint venture?

Sumitomo can earn 51% through $3M of spend over three years, then up to 80% through a further $3M, and up to 90% after a DFS on a resource above 1Moz AuEq. It must commit at least $600,000 in the first 12 months before it can withdraw.
