Lion Rock Minerals Opens Cameroon Lab to Speed Minta Rare Earth Assay Results
Key Takeaways
- Lion Rock's Yaoundé laboratory in Cameroon is commissioned and fully operational, with capacity of up to 80 samples per day, or 400 per week.
- The lab targets the 3,666-sample backlog from the 761-hole, 50 km alluvial campaign completed on 29 August 2026, with assay batches 42 to 53 queued for ASX disclosure.
- Recycling LST heavy liquid saves roughly USD 12,000 per day, and parallel HMS and whole-sample streams are designed to speed rare earth and mineral sands returns.
- VBKOM's Competent Person endorsed the lab's protocols, while analysis stays with independent labs including ANSTO, ALS Global and Scientific Services.
- No assay results or release dates were disclosed, and the LIMS system still needs user acceptance testing by calendar year-end.
Yaoundé laboratory commissioned to speed Minta assays
Lion Rock Minerals (ASX: LRM) announced on 8 October 2026 that its Yaoundé laboratory in Cameroon has been independently endorsed, officially commissioned and is fully operational. It serves as the central hub for sample preparation, splitting and logistics for the Minta Rare Earth & Monazite Project.
Current capacity is up to 80 samples per day, or 400 per week, through the heavy mineral sands (HMS) preparation stream. HMS concentrates and whole-sample splits for rare earth element (REE) analysis are now prepared in parallel, which the company says expedites the returns from both streams of assays. For investors, that means less waiting between drilling and data.
Key highlights from the announcement:
- Parallel preparation of HMS concentrates and whole-sample splits for REEs
- Increased scheduling flexibility and reduced shipping, handling and logistical expense
- A team of 13 Cameroonians, including a Laboratory Manager and 12 accredited technicians
- Independent inspection and endorsement by Competent Person VBKOM
Theuns de Bruyn, Chief Executive Officer
“Our newly commissioned laboratory with our own team of technicians stands Lion Rock in good stead for mineral sand exploration and operational activities for expediting the assaying of the rich suite of minerals being discovered on the Minta Rare Earth & Monazite Project…”

How does the two-pronged approach to rare earths and mineral sands work?
How the parallel streams work
The two preparation streams can operate in parallel. The HMS stream, post-desliming, separates the heavy mineral fraction for external mineral sands analysis.
The whole-sample stream produces representative splits that retain the original particle-size fractions, including fines, for external REE analysis. No desliming or heavy liquid separation is applied. Whole-sample testing does not need to wait for concentrate analysis to finish, so mineral sands and REE evaluation can progress side by side.
Why concentrate heavy minerals?
Heavy liquid separation uses a dense liquid to isolate the heaviest minerals in a sample, such as rutile, zircon and monazite. These are the minerals most representative of economic value, according to management.
Concentrating them reduces the volume of material shipped and analysed, which lowers volume-related shipping and testing costs. Management also says it magnifies the signal of valuable minerals, helping geologists detect trace concentrations and understand mineral proportions. That information is intended to support more targeted exploration and fast tracking of Mineral Resource definition.
Capacity and cost efficiencies
The announcement outlines several operational details:
- The 80-sample daily limit reflects two desliming stations, each able to process about 40 samples per day.
- Additional stations may be added if required, depending on exploration demands.
- The laboratory recovers and recycles LST heavy liquid, which the company says effectively saves in the vicinity of ~USD 12,000 per day.
- A Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) is nearly complete, with user acceptance testing expected to be completed by calendar year-end.
Drilling pipeline and independent assay validation
The laboratory’s current focus follows the 761-hole alluvial drill campaign announced on 20 July 2026 and completed on 29 August 2026. It covered approximately 50 km of alluvial plains and generated 3,666 samples, described as the largest systematic assay programme conducted on Minta Est to date.
The assay sequence is planned to deliver results for ASX disclosure in the following order. HMC refers to HMS concentrates.
| Component | Samples | Sample Type |
|---|---|---|
| Batch 42 | **86** | HMC |
| Batch 43 | **90** | HMC |
| Batch 44 | **176** | HMC |
| Batch 45 | **214** | HMC |
| Batch 46 | **220** | HMC |
| Batch 47 | **205** | HMC |
| Batch 48 | **245** | HMC |
| Batch 49 | **203** | HMC |
| Batch 50 | **342** | HMC |
| Batch 51 | **146** | IN-SITU |
| Batch 52 | **170** | IN-SITU |
| Batch 53 | **226** | IN-SITU |
After preparation in Yaoundé, samples are dispatched under chain of custody to independent, internationally recognised laboratories. To date, the following have been used:
- Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (Australia)
- Light Deep Earth (South Africa)
- Scientific Services (South Africa)
- ALS Global (Ireland)
| Method | Independent laboratory role | What it tells Lion Rock |
|---|---|---|
| ICP-OES | Measures rare-earth and other target elements after laboratory digestion or fusion | Provides direct elemental data used to report REE and TREO grades |
| XRF | Measures bulk elemental and oxide chemistry, including titanium- and zirconium-bearing components | Supports assessment of TiO2, ZrO2 and broader sample chemistry |
| XRD | Identifies crystalline mineral phases in prepared material | Confirms which minerals are present and complements elemental assays |
| QEMSCAN or equivalent automated mineralogy | Maps mineral species and their distribution within particles | Defines mineral assemblage, associations, liberation and deportment to guide test work |
| Independent laboratory QA/QC | Applies standards, blanks, duplicates and instrument checks | Tests analytical accuracy, precision and contamination before results are accepted |
Assayed results will return to Lion Rock for validation, interpretation and Competent Person review before public reporting. The announcement does not disclose any assay results or release dates.

What does the VBKOM endorsement mean for investors?
As part of commissioning, VBKOM presented Lion Rock with a letter of endorsement, subject to the terms and limitations of the laboratory review scope and available information. It followed an inspection by VBKOM’s Competent Person, Ms Chantelle Obermeyer, who independently formed the view that the operating protocols and standards align with industry-accepted practice and are suitable for preparing heavy mineral sand concentrates for dispatch to accredited international analytical laboratories.
The announcement does not set out a strategic rationale beyond the operational points above. What it does show is a company bringing sample preparation in-house while keeping the analysis itself with independent, accredited laboratories. That combination, together with lower logistics costs, is what the company points to when describing faster returns from both assay streams.
CEO Theuns de Bruyn describes Minta as “a potential multi-generational opportunity”. The project is an 8,800 km² province in Cameroon hosting shallow residual and alluvial rutile mineralisation, with a separate monazite-bearing rare earth evaluation stream at Minta Est.
The ICP-OES programme directly measured 16 elements on the 2025 U.S. List of Critical Minerals: all 15 listed rare earth elements, together with scandium. Minta offers potential exposure to titanium minerals, zirconium and rare-earth elements, including neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium and terbium.
