Fortuna Metals Hits Record 3.43% Rutile Well Below Resource, Hinting at Bigger Deposit
Key Takeaways
- Hole MAC26_016 returned 7m @ 2.27% rutile from 26m to 33m, still mineralised at end of hole, while the current Inferred resource stops at just 8m depth.
- A 3.43% rutile reading at 30-32m is the highest grade recorded at the project, against a 0.87% average in the 298Mt maiden resource.
- Four of six headline intercepts start at surface, led by 24m @ 1.50% rutile in MAC26_047 and 25m @ 1.17% in MAC26_019.
- A 7,618m aircore program is complete with assays still to come over the next 4-6 months, alongside 10,713m of hand auger drilling and rare earths and graphite analysis.
- Fortuna owns 100% of Mkanda, about 20km from Sovereign Metals' Kasiya, with infrastructure close by and only a 2% NSR payable to the vendor.
Fortuna Metals reports deeper Mkanda rutile: 24m @ 1.5% rutile below the Inferred MRE
Fortuna Metals has reported its first aircore drilling results from the Mlongo prospect at the Mkanda Project in Malawi, with rutile returned below the base of the current Inferred Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE). The standout intercept is 7m @ 2.27% rutile from 26m to 33m in hole MAC26_016, with mineralisation continuing to end of hole (EOH).
Within that zone, 3.43% rutile was recorded at 30-32m, which the company describes as the highest rutile grade recorded for the project to date. Further high priority aircore assays are still being processed at the lab.
That matters because the existing resource stops at 8m depth. Rutile still present at 33m hints the deposit may extend well below what has been counted so far.
Tom Langley, CEO, Fortuna Metals
“These aircore results demonstrate a truly world class high grade rutile mineral system that is only getting bigger…”
What were the best intercepts?
Six intercepts headline the release. Four start at surface and run to end of hole.
| Hole ID | From (m) | To (m) | Interval | Rutile grade |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MAC26_047 | 0 | 24 | **24m** | **1.50%** |
| MAC26_019 | 0 | 25 | **25m** | **1.17%** |
| MAC26_036 | 0 | 21 | **21m** | **1.07%** |
| MAC26_046 | 0 | 30 | **30m** | **0.62%** |
| MAC26_016 | 26 | 33 | **7m** | **2.27%** |
| MAC26_035 | 0 | 16 | **16m** | **0.72%** |
Intercepts are length-weighted averages of 2m composite samples above a 0.5% rutile cut-off, with no internal dilution and no top cut applied. All drilling was vertical.
Length-weighting means longer stretches of lower grade count proportionally, so a figure like 2.27% over 7m is not inflated by a single high sample.

Why do rutile and the Mkanda system matter?
What is rutile?
Rutile is a titanium dioxide mineral, the same compound the company’s assay method measures by XRF (a type of X-ray analysis) to calculate rutile percentages. Higher grades matter because more rutile in each tonne of material generally means more product per tonne processed.
The announcement describes the Mkanda style as a residual placer, or eluvial heavy mineral deposit. Weathering of the host rock concentrated heavy minerals in place, rather than rivers or waves moving them, as happens in a traditional placer.
Tropical weathering during the Tertiary depleted the top ~5 to 10m of physically and chemically mobile minerals. That caused significant volume loss and concentrated heavy minerals including rutile.
For you as an investor, this is the key point. The resource was drilled to 8m, which sits within that weathering zone, so the deeper aircore intercepts show why the company sees potential below it.
How does Mkanda compare with its neighbour Kasiya?
The Mkanda and Kampini Projects cover 658km² in Malawi, about 20km south of Sovereign Metals Limited’s (ASX: SVM) Kasiya rutile project. The announcement describes Kasiya as the largest rutile and second largest flake graphite deposit in the world.
Fortuna says Mkanda shows similar geometry to Kasiya, with high-grade core zones flanked by surface-only mineralisation, in the same geological setting.
Mkanda’s maiden Inferred MRE, announced on 15 July 2026, was 298Mt @ 0.87% rutile and 1.19% TGC (total graphitic carbon). Fortuna states this placed Mkanda in the top 6 in the world for contained rutile.

What is the investment thesis and what comes next?
Where could the scale and upside come from?
Key points from the announcement:
- Grade at depth below the current MRE, with the 7m @ 2.27% zone still mineralised at end of hole.
- A 7,618m aircore program is now complete, with results expected on an ongoing basis over the next 4-6 months.
- 1,323 hand auger holes (10,713m) have been completed across Mkanda, including 648 infill holes in 2026.
- 2026 drilling on 200m by 200m spacing is aimed at increasing resource category. The JORC table notes 200m spacing is acceptable for the indicated category for this style of mineralisation.
- Rare earths and graphite analysis is under way in parallel.
Drilling aimed at a higher category is an objective, not a guarantee. Any upgrade would depend on the remaining assays and the resource work that follows.
What about infrastructure and costs?
The central region is about 30km from Lilongwe, 25km from rail access to the Nacala rail corridor, and 15km from high-capacity power lines, with plentiful fresh water for potential future processing options.
Fortuna has also commissioned an in-country laboratory for initial sample preparation ahead of heavy mineral separation. The company says this will reduce total assay cost and accelerate turnaround.
At Kampini, a 66-hole first-pass hand auger program has commenced. The tenement holds about 50km of strike of the schist that hosts Mkanda and Kasiya, with very limited historical drilling.
Fortuna owns 100% of the projects, with a 2% NSR (net smelter royalty) payable to the initial vendor. With aircore and hand auger assays still to come, Mr Langley said he looks forward to “updating the market with a steady stream of assays…”, so news flow looks set to stay active.
