KGL Resources Commits to Build Jervois Copper Mine With Output Targeted for 2028
Key Takeaways
- KGL's board has approved the Final Investment Decision for the Jervois Copper Project, moving it from development into construction with first concentrate targeted for 1H CY2028.
- Around 60% of total project cost is already under executed contracts, including the Sedgman EPC deal signed in September 2026, and capital costs remain consistent with the Baseline Economic Model.
- Funding combines cash reserves, Wheaton Precious Metals proceeds and recent equity, but the "fully funded" status depends on Conditions Precedent from the 2 April 2026 US$300m streaming agreement.
- Jervois is planned as a 10-year mine producing about 30,000 tonnes of copper a year, plus silver and gold, with KGL holding 100%.
- A funded $20m 2026-2028 exploration plan targets resource growth, mine-life extension and new discoveries across the Jervois and Unca Creek tenements.
Final Investment Decision approved for Jervois Copper Project
KGL Resources has taken the step that separates a development story from a construction story. The Board approved the Final Investment Decision (FID) for the Jervois Copper Project in the Northern Territory, announced on 15 October 2026.
An FID is the formal point where a board commits capital to build a project. Here is what the announcement set out:
- First concentrate production is targeted for the first half of the 2028 calendar year
- Total capital costs, allowing for scope changes and present-day pricing, remain consistent with the Baseline Economic Model (BEM) estimate
- Around 60% of the Project’s total cost is already under executed contracts
The Company says it is now less than two years from first concentrate, as the Project moves from development into execution and construction. For you as an investor, that shifts the focus from studies to delivery.
Jeff Gerard, KGL Chairman
“Delivery of the FID for our Jervois Copper Project reflects the technical, commercial, organisational and funding maturity of this Project.”
Jeff Gerard, KGL Chairman
“From a project viability perspective, the Board is satisfied that the FID confirms that all aspects of the previously released BEM remain valid.”

Funding in place and construction progress
How is the Project paying for it, and what has already been built?
Fully funded pathway
According to the announcement, funding comprises existing cash reserves, Wheaton Precious Metals proceeds and recently raised equity. The announcement does not disclose amounts for the cash reserves or the equity raise.
The “fully funded” status and the Wheaton proceeds are both subject to satisfaction of Conditions Precedent detailed in the 2 April 2026 announcement, “US$300mill agreement Ag and Au Streaming with Wheaton”. That qualifier matters, because it tells you the funding picture depends on those conditions being met.
Milestones delivered since the BEM
KGL reported a series of development milestones since the BEM was released:
- The Sedgman Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract was agreed and signed in September 2026
- Commitments for long-lead equipment were made, including grinding mills, flotation cells and the IsaMill
- Site works progressed, including a 72-room construction camp installed, a 180-room village under construction and demolition of the historical processing facilities
- Tendering and contract negotiation progressed for the water pipeline, civil construction and accommodation village packages
- The Mining Services Agreement (MSA) progressed to its final stages
Site images in Figure 1 of the announcement are presented as evidence of this progress.
Gerard Maley, Northern Territory Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Mining and Energy
“The Jervois project will create hundreds of jobs for Territorians and deliver significant economic opportunities…”
Why EPC contracting and FID matter to investors
An EPC contract hands one contractor the engineering, procurement and construction of a project. Sedgman holds that role at Jervois. An FID, as noted, is the board’s formal commitment to spend.
The two connect through risk. KGL states that with around 60% of total cost under executed contracts, completion uncertainty is further reduced. In plain terms, fewer unknown costs remain.
| Item | Detail | Investor relevance |
|---|---|---|
| Mine life | Initial 10 years | Sets the production window the Project is built around |
| Steady-state output | Approximately 30,000 tonnes of copper per annum, plus significant silver and gold by-products | Indicates the scale of expected production, plus by-product credits |
| Ownership | 100%-owned | KGL holds the Project outright |
Mr Gerard said the Project is expected to be “strongly cashflow positive once in full production.” That is a forward-looking expectation, not a result.

Timeline to first concentrate and exploration upside
Construction runs from FID to practical completion. A six-month ramp-up to full plant processing capacity follows during 2028, covering mill throughput, metallurgical recovery and design compliance validation.
Alongside construction, KGL continues its funded $20m 2026-2028 exploration plan. It includes targeted drilling for Resource expansion within the Jervois tenement and an improved resolution Magnetotelluric (MT) geophysics program.
The Company says its exploration targets resource growth, mine-life extension and new discoveries across the broader Jervois and Unca Creek tenements. For you, that is the longer-term upside sitting behind the near-term build.
The date to watch remains first concentrate production, targeted for the first half of the 2028 calendar year.
