Western Yilgarn Confirms High-Grade Gallium System at Cardea 1
The company's maiden helicopter-borne reconnaissance program has identified impressive gallium mineralisation across two exploration licenses (E36/1020 and E36/1080) situated approximately 21 kilometers apart. The discovery, located about 50 kilometers southwest of Gold Fields' Agnew Gold Mine, represents a potentially significant new source of this critical technology metal.
Rock chip sampling across the project returned remarkably high gallium grades including:
The mineralised system remains open in all directions, indicating strong potential for further extensions and discovery. The samples were predominantly obtained from pisolitic agglomerate, with a total of 21 rock-chip samples collected across the company's tenements during June 2025.
"We are very pleased with the results from the initial helicopter-borne reconnaissance program at our Ida Holmes Junction Project. These early-stage findings highlight the Project's significant mineral potential, particularly given the minimal historical exploration conducted across the area," commented Western Yilgarn Non-Executive Director Pedro Kastellorizos.
Gallium is a critical metal essential for modern technology applications. Unlike many commodities, gallium has unique properties that make it irreplaceable in several high-tech applications:
Global demand for gallium is accelerating as technology adoption increases, while supply remains tightly constrained. Currently, most gallium is produced as a byproduct of aluminum production from bauxite, making dedicated gallium deposits potentially highly valuable.
The Western Yilgarn gallium discovery could therefore represent a strategically important new source of this metal at a time when secure supply chains for critical minerals are becoming increasingly important to governments and technology manufacturers worldwide.
This new gallium discovery complements Western Yilgarn's existing critical minerals assets, including:
| Project | Resource | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Julimar West | 168.3Mt @ 36.1% Al₂O₃, 14.7% SiO₂ | JORC Inferred |
| Cardea 2 | 20.1Mt @ 32.1% Al₂O₃, 26.3% SiO₂ | JORC Inferred |
| Cardea 3 | 16.6Mt @ 34.2% Al₂O₃, 30.2% SiO₂ | JORC Inferred |
| New Norcia | 39.3Mt @ 22.7% Available Al₂O₃, 12.8% Reactive SiO₂ | JORC Inferred |
The company's global bauxite resource now stands at 205Mt @ 34.1% Total Al₂O₃ and 23.7% Total Silica with 43Mt @ 30.7% Available alumina (Al₂O₃) and 6.43% reactive silica (SiO₂).
Mr. Kastellorizos noted that while gallium is the primary exploration focus at Ida Holmes Junction, "Western Yilgarn also holds a gallium-focused exploration licence over the New Norcia Bauxite-Gallium Project in the highly prospective Darling Range just north of Perth."
The Ida Holmes Junction Project is strategically located at the intersection of two significant geological structures: the Holmes Dyke and the Mt Ida Fault. The project is near several major mining operations, including BHP's Leinster and Mt Keith nickel projects, and approximately 60 kilometers north of Delta Lithium's Mt Ida Lithium Project.
Western Yilgarn is already planning follow-up exploration to extend and delineate the newly identified mineralised zones along strike. This will include more extensive soil and rock chip sampling programs aimed at delineating the lateral extent of surface gallium mineralisation.
The Western Yilgarn gallium discovery occurs in an area that has seen minimal historical exploration for this metal, suggesting significant potential for expanding the identified mineralisation through systematic exploration programs.
The Western Yilgarn gallium discovery presents interesting potential from a mining and processing perspective. Gallium typically occurs in very low concentrations in most deposits globally, often less than 50 parts per million. The grades identified in Western Yilgarn's samples (up to 195.5 g/t or 195.5 parts per million) are therefore exceptionally high by industry standards.
Gallium is traditionally recovered as a byproduct from the processing of bauxite ore for aluminium production. The Bayer process used to extract alumina from bauxite concentrates gallium in the caustic soda solution, from which it can be recovered through various extraction methods. However, the high-grade gallium discovery in Western Yilgarn's samples may potentially allow for direct extraction methods.
Furthermore, recent mineralisation results from other companies suggest growing interest in gallium as a standalone mineral target. The company's existing bauxite resources could provide additional gallium production potential, creating multiple pathways for Western Yilgarn to become a significant producer of this critical metal.
Western Yilgarn has positioned itself at the forefront of critical minerals exploration in Western Australia with several compelling factors for investors to consider:
Critical Metal Focus: The company is targeting gallium, a metal essential for technology applications with supply constraints and growing demand
Multiple Projects: With significant bauxite resources already defined and now high-grade gallium potential, Western Yilgarn offers exposure to several critical minerals
Strong Initial Results: The high grades of gallium found in initial sampling (up to 195.5 g/t) suggest significant potential
Strategic Location: Projects are located in established mining regions with excellent infrastructure and proximity to other major operations
Clear Development Path: The company has outlined concrete plans for follow-up exploration to expand the discovery
As global technology adoption accelerates and the push for critical minerals intensifies, the Western Yilgarn gallium discovery positions the company to potentially benefit from increasing demand for this essential technology metal. Recent rare earth element company activities have also highlighted the strategic importance of gallium in the global minerals market, while Axel REE's Caladao project has demonstrated similar potential for high-grade gallium findings. The company's diverse project portfolio and focus on metals critical to modern technology applications makes it a noteworthy addition to investment watchlists in the resource sector.
