Western Gold Resources Eyes New Mill Partners to Keep Gold Duke on Track
Key Takeaways
- Western Gold Resources has lost its Wiluna toll milling pathway but Gold Duke remains fully permitted with four approved Stage 1 pits, a contracted mining operator, site infrastructure in place, and a 277,000oz Mineral Resource at 4.84Mt @ 1.8g/t Au.
- WGR is formally engaging multiple alternative processing counterparties and separately assessing a Company-controlled processing solution that would eliminate reliance on third-party campaign scheduling.
- The Expanded Scoping Study is being revised on updated December 2025 resource models with the explicit aim of extending mine life beyond the prior 14-month Stage 1 plan and re-optimising economics at current AUD gold prices — which the Board notes are materially above the prior study's A$5,500/oz upper bound.
- A 12,000-metre RC drilling program targeting strike and depth extensions at Emu, Eagle, Joyners Find and Gold King South will be progressed once a processing solution is confirmed, with all drilling within existing approved disturbance areas requiring no new regulatory approvals.
- The Board is actively assessing corporate proposals against the standalone value it believes can be delivered through current development workstreams, adding a potential M&A dimension to the investment case.
Gold Duke remains development-ready as WGR pursues alternative processing routes
Western Gold Resources (ASX: WGR) has moved swiftly to address the loss of its Wiluna tolling pathway, commencing formal engagement with alternative processing counterparties while simultaneously working to upsize the Gold Duke Project before locking in a new solution.
The deferral of third-party tolling at Wiluna Mining Corporation’s mill removed an immediate processing route, but it did not alter the underlying project. Gold Duke remains a fully permitted open pit gold development with a 277,000oz Mineral Resource at 4.84Mt @ 1.8g/t Au (including 2.05Mt @ 1.6g/t Au for 104,000oz in the Measured and Indicated categories), four approved Stage 1 pits, an appointed mining operator, site infrastructure in place, and a dedicated water supply drilled. The project is 100%-owned by WGR.
This is a company in active problem-solving mode, not one in retreat.

Multiple processing pathways under active assessment
WGR has commenced formal engagement with several alternative processing counterparties, specifically operators of existing facilities within economic haulage distance of Gold Duke. The Company is assessing both campaign toll treatment and longer-term ore purchase or profit share structures with these third-party operators.
Simultaneously, WGR is assessing options to secure a processing solution under the Company’s own control. A Company-controlled processing route, if it can be secured on acceptable commercial terms, could reduce WGR’s reliance on third-party campaign scheduling and provide greater control over the timing and economics of processing.
Gold Duke sits within an established gold mining region containing a number of existing processing facilities, as illustrated in the regional processing location map (Figure 1 in the announcement), which shows infrastructure operated by several regional producers across the northern Goldfields.
The Board is also actively considering corporate opportunities that may enhance shareholder value. Consistent with its obligations, the Board will assess any proposal against the standalone value it believes can be delivered through the current workstreams. There is no certainty that any proposal will be received, that any transaction will be agreed, or as to the terms on which any transaction might proceed.
Why processing control matters for junior gold developers
Toll milling is an arrangement where a junior miner ships ore to an existing processing facility and pays a fee to have it processed, avoiding the capital cost of building its own plant. Most junior gold developers rely on it because constructing a processing plant can cost tens of millions of dollars.
The risk is counterparty dependence. If the toll mill operator defers or cancels access (as occurred at Wiluna), the junior miner’s entire production schedule can stall. A single point of failure becomes a project-wide problem, as WGR experienced.
A Company-controlled processing solution eliminates that dependence. If achievable on acceptable commercial terms, it gives WGR authority over its own schedule and greater certainty over processing economics, which is strategically superior for a project of Gold Duke’s scale and stage.
Expanded Scoping Study and resource growth targeting a bigger project
Rather than simply replacing the lost Wiluna pathway on a like-for-like basis, WGR is using the disruption as an opportunity to upsize the project before committing to a new processing solution.
The Expanded Scoping Study is being revised on the updated December 2025 Mineral Resource models and is directed at four specific objectives:
- Bringing additional mineralised material into the Production Target, including material previously excluded on lower gold price assumptions
- Extending mine life beyond the current 14-month Stage 1 plan through LOM extension and Stage 2 brownfields material
- Re-optimising pit designs and cut-off grades at gold prices reflective of current market conditions
- Testing project economics against each of the processing pathways currently under assessment
For context, the prior Updated Scoping Study (released 24 September 2025) reported a Production Target of 686kt @ 2.1g/t Au for 42,800oz, pre-mining capital of approximately A$2.6M to A$2.8M, and an estimated undiscounted cash surplus of A$56.1M to A$97.3M across a A$4,500/oz to A$5,500/oz gold price range. These figures are from that prior study and are not outcomes of the Expanded Scoping Study currently underway. The Board notes that the prevailing Australian dollar gold price is materially above the upper end of that range, a supportive backdrop for the revised assessment.
The Gold Duke Mineral Resource upgrade to 277,000oz established the foundation on which the Expanded Scoping Study is now being revised, with the December 2025 resource models providing updated geological confidence across the Emu, Eagle, Joyners Find and Gold King South deposits.
Resource drilling program targeting deposit extensions
The LOM Extension grade control and infill drilling program comprises approximately 12,000 metres of reverse circulation (RC) drilling. It targets south and north extensions to the Emu, Eagle, Joyners Find and Gold King South deposits, immediately adjacent to and down-dip of the Stage 1 mining areas.
All drilling sits within existing approved disturbance areas, meaning no new regulatory approvals are required. Mineralisation at Emu, Eagle and Gold King remains open along strike and at depth, with multiple stacked lodes recognised. Average drill depth across the project remains shallow, and WGR sees clear scope to add tonnes and ounces. The drilling program will be progressed in line with a confirmed processing solution.
High-grade continuity across Gold Duke deposits at Emu, Eagle and Gold King has been a consistent feature of the drilling record, supporting the geological case for strike and depth extensions that the LOM infill and grade control program is now designed to test.
Managing Director Cullum Winn
“The deferral of third-party tolling at Wiluna has required us to reassess the processing pathway for Gold Duke. Importantly, the underlying Mineral Resource and the substantial work already completed to prepare the Project for Stage 1 mining remain in place. We are therefore progressing a number of alternative processing options while completing the Expanded Scoping Study using the updated Mineral Resource models. The objective is to determine whether additional material can be incorporated into a revised production target and potentially extend the mine life. In parallel, we continue to progress the planned resource extension and infill drilling program and engagement with relevant stakeholders. The Board will also consider any corporate opportunities that arise against the value that may be delivered through continued development of Gold Duke.”

Next steps and what investors should watch
WGR’s five disclosed next steps are:
- Progress commercial discussions with alternative processing counterparties and assessment of a Company-controlled processing solution
- Complete the Expanded Scoping Study on the updated Mineral Resource models
- Advance the LOM Extension grade control and infill drilling program and subsequent Mineral Resource update
- Continue engagement and consultation with native title and heritage stakeholders
- Assess any corporate proposals received against standalone value
The investment case here rests on a fully permitted, operator-appointed, infrastructure-ready gold project with a 277,000oz resource, a rising AUD gold price backdrop well above the assumptions used in prior economic modelling, and multiple active workstreams to resolve processing and grow the resource. The Board’s willingness to assess corporate proposals against standalone value adds an additional dimension for investors watching the stock.
The Company will keep shareholders informed of material developments across each workstream in accordance with its continuous disclosure obligations.
