Flagship Minerals Lifts Whipsaw Copper Ground 132% as Spin-Out Plans Take Shape
Key Takeaways
- Three new claims covering ~37.5km² lift Whipsaw's ground position by ~132% to ~66km², granted just over 3 months after lodgement in June.
- The new ground captures strike extensions to a JORC (2012) Exploration Target of 512Mt to 1,024Mt at 0.20% to 0.40% CuEq, though it is conceptual and not a Mineral Resource.
- Whipsaw sits 160km east of Vancouver and 17km west of Hudbay's Copper Mountain, in a province backing a mining revival.
- LiDAR, drone magnetic and satellite surveys come next, aimed at sharpening drill targets before any holes are drilled.
- A Whipsaw Copper Limited IPO spin-out is being prepared, but timing, size and pricing are undisclosed and approvals are still required.
Flagship Minerals secures three new claims, expanding Whipsaw Copper Project by ~132%
Three Mineral Claim applications covering ~37.5km² have been granted to Whipsaw Copper Limited, the 100% owned Canadian subsidiary of Flagship Minerals (ASX:FLG). In an update dated 5 October 2026, the company said the grants strengthen its position in British Columbia copper at the Whipsaw Copper Project.
The claims (numbers 1139757, 1139758 and 1139759) lift the Whipsaw ground position by ~132% to ~66km². They also capture prospective strike extensions to the existing JORC (2012) Exploration Target, which sits within a porphyry system extending approximately 3.7km by 1.2km.
A porphyry is a large body of rock where copper and other metals are spread through a wide area, which is why these systems are valued for scale. More tenure along strike gives the company room to test whether the system continues.
The applications were lodged in June during Flagship’s due diligence on Whipsaw and granted after just over 3 months.
Management view
Managing Director Paul Lock tied the grants to the company’s spin-out plans and its focus on Chile.
Paul Lock, Managing Director
“Our objective is straightforward: advance Whipsaw in a capital-efficient manner in preparation for a spin-out to unlock value for Flagship shareholders, while maintaining our focus on advancing Isidora Gold to a second MRE upgrade and feasibility.”

Whipsaw Exploration Target: scale in a Tier-1 jurisdiction
Whipsaw is described as a large-scale copper porphyry in an infrastructure rich, pro mining setting, 160km east of Vancouver and 17km west of Hudbay’s Copper Mountain project. Flagship calls British Columbia a Tier-1 mining jurisdiction with a strong copper mining industry.
Lock pointed to the provincial government’s push for a mining revival. He cited recent approvals including Hudbay Minerals’ New Ingerbelle expansion at Copper Mountain, Skeena Gold & Silver’s Eskay Creek and Centerra Gold’s Mount Milligan expansion.
The Exploration Target, first reported on 18 June 2026, is summarised below. An Exploration Target is a range of potential size and grade based on current data. It is not a Mineral Resource.
| Whipsaw Exploration Target (JORC 2012) | Range |
|---|---|
| Tonnes | 512Mt – 1,024Mt |
| Copper equivalent (CuEq) grade | 0.20% – 0.40% CuEq |
CuEq converts the value of several metals into a single copper-equivalent grade. Flagship states its opinion that all the elements included in the calculation have a reasonable potential to be recovered and sold.
The company also notes that the potential quantity and grade of the Exploration Target is conceptual in nature. There has been insufficient exploration to estimate a Mineral Resource, and it is uncertain whether further exploration will result in one.
For you as an investor, that caveat matters. The figures show the scale Flagship is chasing, not a confirmed deposit.
How remote sensing and drone surveys could sharpen drill targets
Flagship plans to commence LiDAR and drone magnetic surveys over Whipsaw. It is also finalising an assessment of ASTER and Sentinel-2 remote sensing datasets, which are satellite data used to identify hydrothermal alteration, iron signatures and other features associated with porphyry, skarn and structural targets.
In plain terms, each tool looks for something different:
- LiDAR uses laser scanning to map the ground surface, picking out structural landforms, intersections and old workings.
- Drone magnetics measures variations in the magnetic field, which can flag lithological (rock type), alteration and structural anomalies.
- ASTER and Sentinel-2 satellite data highlight hydrothermal alteration and iron signatures.
The company says combining these datasets with known geological and geochemical data in a GIS (geographic information system, a digital mapping environment) provides a cost-effective approach to generating targets. Flagship will also fold in its drilling data.
The logic is that surveys are cheaper than drilling, so drill holes can be aimed with more information. The company says this multi-disciplinary approach reduces exploration risk, as the probability of discovering concealed, partially exposed and surface mineral systems is increased, improving drill targeting hit rates.
That is a statement of intent rather than a guarantee. Better targeting improves the odds, and it does not assure a discovery.

Spin-out pathway and next steps
Flagship is preparing Whipsaw Copper Limited for a potential spin-out via an initial public offering of shares in the subsidiary, subject to shareholder and other regulatory approvals. The announcement does not disclose timing, size or pricing.
Next steps outlined by the company include:
- Commencing the LiDAR and drone magnetic surveys.
- Finalising the ASTER and Sentinel-2 assessment.
- Ranking and prioritising identified exploration targets.
- Follow-up fieldwork to identify geological and geochemical indicators for targeted mineralisation styles.
- Reporting upcoming results from recent field trips.
Where Whipsaw fits
Flagship says Whipsaw complements its strategy of advancing the Isidora Gold Project in Chile while securing additional gold and copper development opportunities in Tier-1 jurisdictions. At Isidora, the focus remains on a second Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE) upgrade and feasibility.
For context, the Isidora Norte MRE stands at 2.1Moz of gold, comprising 115.2Mt @ 0.56 g/t Au for 2,093koz.
The takeaway is straightforward. Flagship is offering dual gold and copper exposure across Chile and British Columbia, with a potential spin-out as a possible value-unlock event, though that remains subject to approvals and no timetable has been given.
