Dreadnought Resources Launches 750-Hole Drill Push Across Yilgarn’s Last Underexplored Gold Belt

Dreadnought Resources has launched a 750-hole, 50,000m air core drilling campaign at its Illaara Gold Project targeting Black Oak — a 7km-plus mineralised corridor with orogenic gold pathfinder chemistry that's only had 10% of the belt tested so far.

Dreadnought kicks off major drilling campaign at one of the Yilgarn’s last underexplored greenstone belts

Dreadnought Resources (ASX: DRE) has commenced a ~750-hole, ~50,000m air core drilling program at its 100%-owned Illaara Gold Project in WA’s Yilgarn Craton. The program executes the company’s “Finding More Gold, Faster” strategy across one of the most underexplored greenstone belts in the Yilgarn — a belt historically held for iron ore that is now seeing its first ever systematic air core drilling program.

Drilling begins at the Black Oak prospect and is expected to run 3–4 months, with first assays anticipated from October 2026.

Q1 FY27 drilling focus: Black Oak and what the ground is already saying

Black Oak is the logical starting point. Wide-spaced first-pass air core drilling completed earlier in 2026 defined a mineralised corridor extending to more than 7 km in strike, open to the north and still growing. That first-pass program tested only approximately 10% of the Illaara belt but already identified 13 distinct gold mineralised corridors ranging from approximately 1.5 km to more than 7 km in strike.

The intercepts from Black Oak that first-pass drilling returned are notable for their width and consistency:

  • 18m @ 0.8 g/t Au from 36m to EOH, including 3m @ 1.8 g/t Au from 51m to EOH (ILAC0483)
  • 21m @ 0.3 g/t Au from surface, including 3m @ 1.1 g/t Au from 3m (ILAC0139)
  • 9m @ 0.5 g/t Au from 33m, including 3m @ 1.4 g/t Au from 36m (ILAC0139)

Alongside the gold values, the geochemistry is telling its own story. Black Oak carries a strong orogenic gold pathfinder signature: silver, arsenic, antimony, tellurium and tungsten (Ag-As-Sb-Te-W). In plain terms, this combination of trace elements is the chemical fingerprint that geologists look for when trying to identify whether a system has the plumbing of a major orogenic gold deposit at depth. It is a signature, not a guarantee, but it is exactly what exploration teams want to see at this stage.

Infill drilling at Black Oak is expected to take approximately 4–6 weeks, after which the rig moves to CRA Homestead before tackling new first-pass areas in the southern and eastern parts of Illaara.

Dean Tuck, Managing Director

“Illaara is one of the last major greenstone belts without systematic gold exploration and air core drilling is one of our key tools for systematic gold exploration. It is a fast, relatively low-cost way to drill through the deep weathered soil and rock so we can sample the fresher rock underneath and identify the hallmarks of a major gold bearing structure. Our first-pass drilling has already identified over 40km of prospective mineralised corridors while having tested only around 10% of the Illaara greenstone belt. Black Oak is one of those mineralised structures and, according to the results to date, has the potential to host a large-scale gold system. Wide-spaced drilling has defined a >7 km corridor of gold mineralisation, open to the north and growing, with shallow gold mineralisation from surface and a strong orogenic gold pathfinder association including Ag-As-Sb-Te-W, which is a signature we look for in an emerging orogenic gold system. A major gold discovery is central to our Finding More Gold, Faster strategy, and we look forward to this next phase of air core drilling and defining targets for RC discovery drilling in 2026 and 2027.”

Why air core drilling is the right tool for Illaara — and what it has unlocked elsewhere

Air core drilling is a fast, cost-effective method that cuts through the deep layer of weathered soil and rock (regolith) sitting above bedrock across most of the Yilgarn, allowing geologists to sample fresher rock beneath and detect low-level gold anomalies, alteration, and related geochemistry. The process follows a disciplined two-stage funnel: wide-spaced first-pass drilling (lines approximately 800m apart, holes approximately 200m apart along each line) identifies anomalism, which then triggers closer-spaced infill air core drilling, before the most compelling targets graduate to more powerful RC and diamond drilling.

The announcement notes that systematic air core drilling played a key role in a number of major WA gold discoveries, including Hemi, Gruyere, Tropicana and Garden Well. These examples illustrate the role of the method only and are not an indication that similar mineralisation exists at Illaara.

Metzke’s Find resource and the self-funded explorer roadmap

Illaara is not starting from scratch. The project already hosts a high-grade foundation at Metzke’s Find: a 24,900 oz @ 5.2 g/t Au Resource at a 0.5 g/t Au cutoff, with 84% in the Indicated category. Mineralisation at Metzke’s Find remains open along strike and at depth.

Total 106,800 6.0 20,800 43,300 3.0 4,200 150,100 5.2 24,900

The self-funded explorer strategy underpinning the Metzke’s Find development model is straightforward: funding, development, haulage and processing are outsourced to third parties for the high-grade open pit, reducing reliance on market funding. Internal cashflows generated from that arrangement are then directed back into exploration and discovery across the broader Illaara belt.

What’s next — catalysts on the horizon

Dreadnought has a clear news flow lined up across its projects through the end of 2026:

  • September 2026: Further results of target definition work at Mangaroon Gold
  • September 2026: Results of target generation work at Mangaroon South
  • September 2026: Upgrade JORC Exploration Target — Gifford Creek
  • September/October 2026: Metzke’s Find study results — Illaara Gold
  • October 2026: Results from infill air core drilling at Black Oak — Illaara Gold
  • October–December 2026: Results from first-pass and infill air core drilling across Illaara Gold
  • November 2026: Results from gold and tungsten target definition work at Mangaroon and Mangaroon South

The thread connecting all of this activity is Dreadnought’s stated objective: defining RC discovery drilling targets for 2026 and 2027. With only 10% of the Illaara belt tested and 13 mineralised corridors already on the map, the scale of what remains to be drilled is the central investment thesis here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is air core drilling and why is Dreadnought Resources using it at Illaara?

Air core drilling is a fast, cost-effective method that cuts through the deep weathered rock layer (regolith) covering most of the Yilgarn Craton, allowing geologists to sample fresher bedrock beneath and detect gold anomalies. Dreadnought is using it at Illaara because it enables rapid, systematic coverage of a large greenstone belt that has never been systematically drilled for gold before.

What has Dreadnought Resources found at Black Oak so far?

First-pass air core drilling at Black Oak has defined a mineralised corridor extending more than 7km in strike, still open to the north, with intercepts including 18m at 0.8 g/t Au from 36m and 21m at 0.3 g/t Au from surface, plus a strong orogenic gold pathfinder geochemical signature (Ag-As-Sb-Te-W).

When will Dreadnought Resources release results from the Black Oak drilling program?

First assays from the Black Oak infill air core drilling are expected in October 2026, with broader results from first-pass and infill drilling across the Illaara belt continuing through October to December 2026.

What is the Metzke's Find resource at Illaara Gold Project?

Metzke's Find is a high-grade gold resource of 24,900 oz at 5.2 g/t Au at a 0.5 g/t cutoff, with 84% in the Indicated category, and mineralisation remains open along strike and at depth.

How much of the Illaara greenstone belt has Dreadnought Resources drilled so far?

Only approximately 10% of the Illaara greenstone belt has been tested by first-pass air core drilling, which has already identified 13 distinct gold mineralised corridors totalling more than 40km of prospective strike — leaving the vast majority of the belt yet to be systematically drilled.
