Axel REE Fast Tracks Caldas Exploration After Lynas Proposes Meteoric Deal
Key Takeaways
- Axel's best Caldera result is 13m at 5,735ppm TREO from surface, including 4m at 11,568ppm TREO, but it is previously reported data and not new drilling.
- Lynas and Meteoric signed a binding Scheme Implementation Deed on 1 October 2026, and that deal prompted Axel to fast-track its Caldas program.
- Several Caldera holes ended in mineralisation, so follow-up drilling will test depth below the auger holes, with leach testing to follow at SGS Brazil.
- No resource exists at Caldas and the announcement gives no timelines, so the gap between intercepts and a resource remains wide.
- Caladão, with 709Mt REE and 576Mt Ga resources, stays Axel's priority ahead of the Woolrich field validation program.
Caldas review backs accelerated exploration after Lynas–Meteoric deal
Axel REE (ASX: AXL) has reviewed its previously reported results at the Caldas Project following Lynas Rare Earths’ proposed acquisition of Meteoric Resources. The review supports the soon-to-commence accelerated exploration program at the project.
No new exploration results are reported. Everything in the announcement is previously reported data, so this is a re-read of existing drilling rather than fresh news from the drill bit.
The Caldas Project covers ~228km² of tenements, held 100% by Axel, both within and along the weathered contact of the Poços de Caldas alkaline complex in Minas Gerais, Brazil. That means the licences span the inside of the complex and its weathered edges.
The Lynas deal is a third-party transaction, not an Axel one. On 1 October 2026, Lynas and Meteoric announced a binding Scheme Implementation Deed, which remains subject to shareholder and court approvals and other applicable conditions.

“The proposed acquisition of Meteoric by Lynas prompted us to fast track our plans at Caldas…”
The signal for you: Axel appears to be moving while renewed attention is on the district.

Caldera prospect delivers high-grade intercepts from surface
The headline result is 13m at 5,735ppm TREO (25% MREO) from surface in hole CAL-AUG-009, including 4m at 11,568ppm TREO (28% MREO) from 9m. TREO is total rare earth oxides, while MREO covers the magnet rare earth oxides.
The same hole also returned an individual sample of 1m at 19,493ppm TREO from 11m.
Other previously reported Caldera highlights, all from surface, include:
- CAL-AUG-022: 8.8m at 5,309ppm TREO
- CAL-AUG-003: 20m at 3,082ppm TREO
- CAL-AUG-015: 23m at 2,692ppm TREO
Here is how the four holes compare:
| Hole ID | Interval | TREO ppm | MREO/TREO % | NdPr ppm |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CAL-AUG-009 | 13m from 0m | 5,735 | 25% | 1,359 |
| CAL-AUG-022 | 8.8m from 0m | 5,309 | 27% | 1,380 |
| CAL-AUG-003 | 20m from 0m | 3,082 | 28% | 805 |
| CAL-AUG-015 | 23m from 0m | 2,692 | 28% | 711 |
Several holes ended in mineralisation, which supports further drilling to test depth extension below the auger drilling. The mineralisation includes the magnet rare earths neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium and terbium.
Axel’s Caldera licences sit within the same regional alkaline complex that hosts Meteoric’s Caldeira and Viridis Mining and Minerals’ Colossus projects. Regional proximity provides exploration context but does not establish continuity or equivalence of mineralisation, resources, recoverability or project value between Axel’s licences and neighbouring projects.
Contact-zone blocks add exploration upside
The North, East and South blocks sit along the weathered contact, outside the Caldera. They give the project exploration exposure beyond a single setting.
The best previously reported intercepts from each block are:
- North Block: 6m at 1,370ppm TREO from 1m (CAL-AUG-079)
- East Block: 10m at 1,552ppm TREO from 10m (CAL-AUG-083)
- South Block: 8m at 2,540ppm TREO from surface (CAL-AUG-113)
The auger campaigns were modest in size: 18 holes at the North Block, 11 holes at the East Block and 28 holes at the South Block. For investors, the blocks diversify the project beyond the Caldera, though they are earlier-stage and lower grade.
How does the ionic clay model work?
Ionic clay-hosted rare earths form when weathering breaks down the parent rock and rare earth elements stick (adsorb) to clay particles in the weathered profile. Southern China’s ionic rare earth deposits serve as a process analogue for Axel’s exploration model.
In-situ recovery (ISR) extracts metals from the ground using a leaching solution, without conventional mining. Axel describes its approach as aiming to minimise surface disturbance and capital intensity, which is why leach testing matters to investors.
The characteristics of the local mineralisation require further assessment. Nothing in the announcement says Caldas is equivalent to southern China’s deposits.

What are the next steps and where does Caladão fit?
Axel intends to use its existing geological, geochemical and drilling data to prioritise the next phase. Planned work comprises:
- Follow-up drilling to better define mineralised horizons and assess their distribution and continuity across priority areas
- Investigation below existing Caldera holes that ended in mineralisation, to assess the depth extent of the mineralised profile
- Selection and submission of representative samples to SGS Brazil for leach testing
This is planned to support a future REE resource delineation at Caldas. No resource exists there today, and the announcement gives no timelines for the work.
Caldas supplements the 709Mt REE and 576Mt Ga global Mineral Resource Estimates at the Caladão Project in northern Minas Gerais, which comprise Inferred and Indicated resources. Inferred Mineral Resources carry a low level of geological confidence.
The Caladão Project remains the priority area ahead of the planned Woolrich field validation program, which is intended to evaluate a potential low-impact ISR development pathway.
