Alkane Resources Deep Hole Hints Peak Hill Gold Runs 1km Down, Misses Copper Target
Key Takeaways
- Hole PHD084 at Peak Hill hit advanced argillic alteration about 1km below the Proprietary pit, which Alkane says points to strong vertical continuity of the epithermal system.
- The hole reached 1,651m but missed its copper-gold porphyry target, with the deep intercept grading just 0.11 g/t Au and 0.02% Cu over 153m.
- The existing Inferred Resource is 1.02Mt at 3.29g/t Au for 108koz, and Alkane notes gold and copper prices have risen significantly since it was estimated.
- A six-hole, 6,600m diamond program mobilises to Peak Hill in November to test grade continuity between PHD084 and the resource, with final assays due in 2027.
- This is a single exploration hole and the announcement implies no resource upgrade, so the follow-up drilling is the next real catalyst.
Deep drilling intersects epithermal mineralisation 1km below Peak Hill pit
Alkane Resources (ASX: ALK, TSX: ALK, OTCQX: ALKRY) has reported that hole PHD084, drilled to 1,651m at its 100%-owned Peak Hill Gold Project in New South Wales, intersected advanced argillic alteration (pyrophyllite-silica) about 1km vertically below the Proprietary open cut. The company says this indicates a strong vertical continuation of the previously mined epithermal mineralisation.
The hole did not reach its primary target, a copper-gold porphyry (a large intrusion-related deposit that can feed shallower gold systems). Alkane nonetheless sees potential for the epithermal resource to extend to significant depth.
A $165,000 NSW Critical Minerals and High-Tech Metals Exploration Program collaborative grant, awarded in 2025, supported the drilling. For investors, the result suggests the epithermal system may extend well below the current resource, though this is a single hole and the company has flagged further work.

PHD084 drilling results
Key intercepts
Alkane described the gold and copper results as low grade. Here are the reported intercepts:
| Zone | Interval | Gold | Copper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upper intercept | 6.4m from 1,000.6m | 0.42 g/t Au | 0.01% Cu |
| Including | 2m from 1,005m | 1.02 g/t Au | 0.01% Cu |
| Deep intercept | 153m from 1,427m | 0.11 g/t Au | 0.02% Cu |
| Including | 23m from 1,476m | 0.25 g/t Au | 0.03% Cu |
| Including | 4.8m from 1,477.9m | 0.46 g/t Au | 0.06% Cu |
True widths are approximately 70% of the intercept widths.
Grades are lower than those seen in drilling about 1km above, within the core of the deposit. Alkane says this lower tenor may indicate the beginning of a transitional zone to the porphyry setting, or that the drilling simply intercepted the system on its periphery.
Geological signals
Alkane said the hole achieved its primary objective by intersecting interpreted transitional phyllic alteration beneath the up-flow zones mapped between the Great Eastern and Parkers pits. However, it was not deep enough to transect the phyllic alteration or lithocap to an underlying porphyry intrusion.
Other signals the company pointed to include:
- Transitional phyllic alteration beneath the Great Eastern-Parkers up-flow zones
- Anhydrite-quartz±chalcopyrite veins and sericite-pyrite veinlets, which can be formed from magmatic fluids related to porphyry deposits
- Pebble dykes, which commonly occur above magmatic intrusions
- Advanced argillic alteration beneath the Proprietary pit, which suggests the system may be associated with a cluster of porphyry intrusions that have been telescoped relative to each other
Nic Earner, Managing Director & CEO
“Whilst the hole did not resolve the target, it did highlight the potential for the shallow epithermal gold resource at Peak Hill to extend to a significant depth below the Proprietary pit…”
Understanding epithermal and porphyry systems
Epithermal gold deposits form near surface from fluids rising off a deeper magmatic source. Alkane interprets Peak Hill as a high sulphidation epithermal gold system likely caused by such a source, such as a copper-gold porphyry.
Alteration changes with depth. Advanced argillic alteration sits shallowest, and phyllic alteration typically sits above the potassic alteration usually associated with porphyry copper-gold deposits. Finding phyllic alteration therefore suggests a porphyry could lie deeper, which is why the PHD084 result keeps that idea alive.
Why does this matter to you? Porphyries can be large copper-gold systems, and Alkane also owns the gold-copper porphyry Boda-Kaiser Project in Central West New South Wales.
Peak Hill sits about 60km southwest of Dubbo and 10km south of Tomingley Gold Operations. Alkane mined the oxidised cap from 1998 to 2005, and the project is currently under care and maintenance.

Next steps and resource context
The refractory sulphide orebody beneath the pits has a JORC (2012) Inferred Resource of 1.02Mt at 3.29g/t Au and 0.15% Cu (108koz gold) at a 2g/t Au cut-off for the Proprietary underground, as reported in the 11 September 2026 “Tomingley Resources & Reserves Statement FY26”. Alkane noted that gold and copper prices have increased significantly since the resource was estimated.
An Inferred Resource carries the lowest geological confidence of the JORC categories, so it is best viewed as an early indicator rather than a firm quantity.
The company outlined the following next steps:
- A surface diamond core rig finishes at the El Paso prospect, then completes a small program at the Tomingley mine site.
- The rig is planned to mobilise to Peak Hill in November for six holes totalling 6,600m, testing the area between PHD084 and the Proprietary Inferred Resource for vertical grade continuity and whether PHD084 may have missed the high-grade core.
- Final assay results are expected in 2027.
- Geotechnical drilling is then planned to inform future mining studies on the existing underground Mineral Resource.
- A new study on PHD084 will evaluate the proximity of possible “pencil” porphyry intrusives, with further drilling to be planned on its results.
The CEO’s quote refers to follow-up drilling commencing in 2026, consistent with the November start.
For investors, this is an exploration-stage result from a single hole. The follow-up program is the next catalyst, and the announcement does not imply any resource upgrade.
