AuKing outlines entry into Greenland niobium and rare earths with Qeqertaasaq project
In its 14 October 2026 investor presentation, management at AuKing Mining (ASX: AKN) outlined plans to acquire up to a 75% interest in the Qeqertaasaq Niobium Project in Greenland with no upfront cost. The presentation does not disclose further deal terms, so earn-in conditions, payments and timelines are not covered here.
The project comprises an exploration licence covering a 3 x 5km carbonatite complex, described as mineralised from surface. A carbonatite is an unusual igneous rock rich in carbonate minerals, and it is often the host for niobium and rare earth deposits.
Headline grades from historical surface samples reach up to 11.8% Nb₂O₅ (sample 199876) and 12.3% TREO (sample ID 195831). Nb₂O₅ is niobium pentoxide, the standard way niobium grades are reported, while TREO means total rare earth oxides.
Management described the structure as a low-entry cost, risk-managed approach into an extensively explored critical-minerals project. For you as an investor, that suggests exposure to a drilled project without a large upfront cheque, though the presentation gives no detail on what AuKing must spend to reach the 75% level.
From the presentation
“Prime opportunity for AuKing to establish itself in West Greenland’s strategically important niobium and rare earths province.”

Historical drilling and trenching show high-grade, open mineralisation
All drilling and trenching results below are historical. The presentation’s cautionary statement says they have not previously been reported under the JORC Code 2012 (the Australian standard for reporting mineral results), and that the company has not independently validated them.
It also notes that confidence in the results could be reduced when reported under JORC 2012 after further work. AuKing says nothing has come to its attention that causes it to question their accuracy or reliability.
Niobium drilling (1975-76)
Kryolitselskabet Øresund drilled shallow scout holes in 1975 with an average depth of less than 10m, followed by deeper holes in 1976. Selected intercepts are below.
| Hole | Interval | Grade (Nb₂O₅) | From depth |
|---|---|---|---|
| 17584 | 5.22m | 2.73% | 4.15m |
| 17629 | 10.4m | 1.29% | 1.9m |
| 17593 | 41m | 0.75% | 7.2m |
| Qa-11 | 84.37m | 0.51% | 13.35m |
| Qa-25 | 53.23m | 0.51% | 35m |
Historical exploration identified shallow, pyrochlore-bearing niobium mineralisation across multiple areas of the complex. Pyrochlore is the main niobium-bearing mineral here.
The presentation states the niobium mineralisation remains open in all directions, meaning drilling has not yet found its edges.
Rare earth trenching (2010)
NunaMinerals conducted shallow trenching in 2010 that returned a peak assay of 13.23% TREO. Highlights include:
- T04: 5.14% TREO over 3.19m
- T01: 4.18% TREO over 2.12m
- T03: 4.16% TREO over 2.34m
The presentation says each interval was mineralised for the entire trench length.
The principal rare earth “Discovery Vein” was historically reported over more than 750m of strike and at least 200m down dip, and remains open along strike and at depth. Rare earth mineralisation was also identified in multiple steeply dipping veins and broader mineralised envelopes.
Metallurgy: up to 82% TREO recovery under mild conditions
What the 2011 testwork showed
In 2011, NunaMinerals A/S, working with US-based IntelliMET LLC, conducted preliminary testwork on Qeqertaasaq rare earth mineralisation. It reported up to 82% TREO recovery from 7% TREO feed, and 53% from 4% TREO feed.
| Reported feed grade | TREO recovery |
|---|---|
| 7% TREO | 82% |
| 4% TREO | 53% |
Conditions were 20-30mm crushed feed, 10% hydrochloric acid, 50°C and a 4-hour reaction, without fine grinding or pre-concentration. A subsequent Discovery Vein test reported more than 80% TREO recovery from coarsely crushed material. The program was preliminary only.
Why niobium and rare earths matter
Niobium is used in high strength steels, superalloys and defence applications. Rare earths are used in permanent magnets, electric vehicles and defence.
Coarse crushing is cheaper than fine grinding, and mild acid is generally easier to handle than harsher chemistry. A result achieved this way is therefore relevant to potential processing costs, although it is historical and unverified.
Proposed flowsheets
The proposed niobium route, aimed at a pyrochlore-bearing concentrate:
- Physical upgrading, including deslime and gravity or magnetic separation.
- Pyrochlore flotation to recover niobium-bearing pyrochlore.
- Concentrate cleaning through regrind and cleaner flotation.
- Niobium concentrate, thickened and filtered.
The proposed rare earth route prioritises physical beneficiation first:
- Crush and screen the mineralised material.
- Gravity separation to recover dense rare earth minerals.
- REE concentrate, dewatered and assessed.
- If further processing is required, hydrochloric-acid extraction and purification, to a potential mixed rare-earth carbonate.
Further processing is subject to metallurgical testwork.

Next steps and portfolio fit
Greenland work program
The presentation sets out three next steps. No timelines or budgets are disclosed.
- Compile historic data to inform the next stage drilling campaign and metallurgical testwork.
- Resource definition drilling of approx. 3,000-5,000m to establish an Inferred MRE (mineral resource estimate).
- Bench-scale metallurgical sampling and testwork, including verification of historic results and design of a suitable beneficiation flowsheet.
Where it sits in AuKing’s critical minerals portfolio
AuKing reset its strategic focus to critical minerals in early 2026. Qeqertaasaq is the latest addition, dated October 2026 in the portfolio build.
| Project | Commodity | Application |
|---|---|---|
| Qeqertaasaq | Niobium & REE | High strength steels, superalloys, defence |
| Tundulu | REE | Permanent magnets, EVs, defence |
| Big Wilson | Tungsten/Tin | Electronics, defence, hard metals |
| Koongie Park | Copper · Zinc | Electrification (Cobalt Blue earn-in up to 75%) |
| Mkuju | Uranium | Nuclear baseload |
The investment angle is an advanced, drilled project, with resource definition drilling aimed at an Inferred MRE as the next catalyst. Until historic results are verified and deal terms are disclosed, the picture remains incomplete.
