Orpheus kicks off maiden drilling at Frome uranium project in South Australia
Orpheus Uranium (ASX: ORP) has commenced its inaugural drilling program at the Frome Project in South Australia’s Callabonna Sub-Basin, with the drill rig on site and drilling starting 29 July 2026. The program represents a major operational milestone following an extended period of technical review, historical data reinterpretation, land access engagement and heritage clearance activities.
The program comprises up to 35 rotary mud drill holes for approximately 5,750 metres, with an initial phase of six to eight holes designed to test the quasi-regional stratigraphic, lithological, and redox interpretation of the area. The drilling targets a 12 km-long interpreted uranium-bearing palaeochannel system at the flagship Erudina Prospect — the first time Orpheus has drilled this prospect.

The program follows a two-stage design. The initial six to eight holes will test Orpheus’ quasi-regional stratigraphic, lithological, and redox interpretation to calibrate the geological model developed through recent technical work. Subsequent holes will target refined areas within the broader palaeochannel system, with potential to refine or extend the program as results are received.
Historical drilling at Erudina has identified widespread uranium anomalism (>100ppm eU3O8) within 64 drill holes across a broad exploration target area. Orpheus’ recent reinterpretation of this historical data has identified multiple laterally and vertically developed redox boundaries, interpreted as potential stacked redox-controlled uranium mineralising positions — a broader target framework than previously recognised.

What sandstone-hosted uranium means for investors
Sandstone-hosted uranium (also called sediment-hosted uranium) forms when oxidised, uranium-bearing groundwater meets chemically reduced ground conditions. At this contact zone — called a redox boundary — uranium precipitates and concentrates within porous sandstone layers. The process is similar to how dissolved minerals in water settle out when conditions change.
Palaeochannels, which are ancient buried river systems, are prime hosts for this style of deposit because they contain porous, permeable sandstone that allows groundwater to flow through, carrying uranium until it encounters the redox boundary.
The Callabonna Sub-Basin location is significant for investors because it is recognised as the premier basin for sandstone-hosted uranium mineralisation. The area hosts several significant uranium deposits, including Four Mile, Honeymoon and Goulds Dam — all within the Eyre Formation, the same geological unit targeted at Erudina. This proximity to producing and defined systems de-risks the geological thesis underpinning Orpheus’ exploration.

Erudina shares geological characteristics with Boss Energy Limited’s (ASX: BOE) Goulds Dam deposit, which holds a Combined Indicated (23%) and Inferred Resource (77%) of 33.1 Mlbs U3O8 at an average grade of 388 ppm U3O8, according to Boss Energy’s announcement dated 19 March 2026. This is a Boss Energy resource and not an Orpheus resource.

The road ahead for Orpheus Uranium
Results from the program will be incorporated into an evolving geological model to guide future exploration across Erudina and the broader Frome Project. The strategic endgame is staged evaluation toward a potential Exploration Target and possible JORC-compliant Mineral Resource Estimate, giving investors clear milestones to track value creation from drill results to a defined resource.
Beyond the Frome Project, Orpheus maintains a broader exploration portfolio across South Australia and the Northern Territory. The company has also extended tenure into Western Australia through the sale agreement for the Oobagooma Uranium Project, which is progressing to completion.
