Hammer Metals Regains Full Control of Mount Isa Copper-Gold Projects as JV Partner Exits
Sumitomo Metal Mining Oceania to exit Mount Isa East Joint Venture
Hammer Metals (ASX: HMX) has announced that Sumitomo Metal Mining Oceania (SMMO) has informed Hammer of its intention to withdraw from the Mount Isa East Joint Venture. The joint venture was originally established with JOGMEC in November 2019, before SMMO acquired JOGMEC’s interest in 2021. The partnership focused on four prospective areas within Hammer’s portfolio: Even Steven, Mt Philp, Malbon, and Dronfield.
SMMO’s signalled intention to withdraw from the Mount Isa East JV follows early exploration success at the Trafalgar deposit and testing of several high-quality targets across the JV area.

What is a joint venture exit in mining exploration?
Joint venture partners in mineral exploration may choose to withdraw when a project no longer aligns with their strategic priorities or capital allocation frameworks. When a partner exits, the remaining party typically consolidates ownership of the tenements previously held under the joint venture agreement.
This is a standard occurrence in exploration-stage projects and does not necessarily reflect negatively on the underlying prospectivity of the ground. For junior explorers, JV exits can create consolidation opportunities that strengthen project ownership and simplify decision-making.
Managing Director highlights retained prospectivity
Hammer’s Managing Director, Daniel Thomas, acknowledged SMMO and JOGMEC’s contributions to the joint venture while emphasising the strategic value of the retained ground.
Daniel Thomas, Managing Director
“We thank Sumitomo Metal Mining Oceania and JOGMEC for their participation in, and contribution to, the Mount Isa East JV. The programs delivered early exploration success at the Trafalgar deposit and tested several high-quality copper-gold targets within the Joint Venture area. Several prospective targets remain within the portfolio and have the potential to support Hammer’s stated hub-and-spoke development strategy, centred on a centralised processing facility at Kalman.”
Management’s framing positions the exit as an opportunity to consolidate prospective ground around the company’s core Kalman asset, supporting its stated hub-and-spoke processing strategy.
Hammer’s strategic portfolio context
Hammer holds approximately 3,600km² of tenements in the Mount Isa mining district, one of Australia’s premier copper-gold provinces. The company maintains significant ownership across multiple deposits:
- Kalman (Cu-Au-Mo-Re) – 100% owned
- Overlander North and South (Cu-Co) – 100% owned
- Lakeview (Cu-Au) – 100% owned
- Elaine (Cu-Au) – 100% owned
- Jubilee (Cu-Au) – 51% interest
The consolidation of the Mount Isa East JV tenements adds to this portfolio of wholly-owned copper-gold exploration targets in a tier-one mining jurisdiction.

Board administrative update
Hammer has appointed James Croser as alternate director for Russell Davis on a temporary basis. The administrative appointment serves as a precautionary measure while Davis travels in a remote area of Western Australia over the next two weeks.
Davis is anticipated to remain contactable for board matters, but the appointment ensures the board can resolve matters in a timely manner if required during this period. The company has lodged an Appendix 3X outlining Croser’s securities interests in his capacity as alternate director.
What Does SMMO’s Exit Mean for Hammer’s Mount Isa Copper-Gold Portfolio?
Sumitomo Metal Mining Oceania’s withdrawal from the Mount Isa East Joint Venture returns several prospective copper-gold targets to Hammer’s full control, potentially strengthening the company’s hub-and-spoke development strategy centred on the Kalman processing facility. The consolidation adds to Hammer’s already substantial 3,600km² landholding in one of Australia’s premier base metals districts.
