Estrella Resources Identifies Gold and Copper at Laleno Dome
Key Takeaways
- Petrographic analysis has confirmed copper mineralisation within hydrothermally altered porphyritic diorite/microdiorite at Laleno Dome — the textbook host rock signature of a porphyry copper-gold system.
- Gold has been identified at Laleno Dome for the first time in this programme, with sample ESR006492 returning 1.3 g/t Au alongside 22.6 ppm Ag and 45.61% Cu from malachite nodules.
- Copper mineralisation has now been identified at nine locations around the dome, including five newly identified occurrences generated by the Mobile Magneto-Telluric drone survey.
- A regional airborne Magneto-Telluric and Magnetic survey is scheduled to commence October 2026, with results expected before year-end, aimed at defining additional drill targets and sub-surface extent of the intrusive bodies.
- Drilling at priority Laleno Dome targets remains pending Timor-Leste Government approval, with no timeline indicated — the key de-risking event the market is waiting on.
Porphyry copper-gold system taking shape at Laleno Dome
Rock-chip assay results from Timor-Leste are adding meaningful definition to Estrella Resources’ copper exploration story at Laleno Dome. Petrographic analysis has confirmed copper mineralisation within hydrothermally altered porphyritic diorite/microdiorite, the hallmark rock type of a porphyry copper system, and gold has now been added to the exploration results at the project for the first time in this programme.
Copper mineralisation has now been identified at nine locations around the dome, including five newly identified occurrences associated with targets generated by the Mobile Magneto-Telluric (MTd) drone survey. The growing footprint of mineralisation is consistent with Estrella’s working interpretation that Laleno Dome has the potential to host a broader intrusion-related copper-gold system, though additional work is required to determine the scale, continuity, and geometry of mineralisation.
Robert Mencel, Managing Director
“These results mark a genuine milestone for Estrella. We have now identified copper mineralisation in porphyritic rock at Laleno Dome, which supports further testing of our geological model for a potential porphyry copper system along the Dome margin. Just as significantly, the rock-chip gold assay results are highly encouraging. Porphyry copper-gold systems are among the most sought-after targets in global exploration, and seeing both metals emerge together at Laleno Dome is exactly what we hoped the program would deliver…”

What the assay results show
The most geologically significant results come from the porphyritic intrusive rock itself. Sample ESR006494 returned 0.66% Cu (6,561 ppm) and sample ESR006498 returned 0.53% Cu (5,334 ppm), also carrying 1.4 ppm Ag. These rock-chip composite results from outcropping porphyritic rock are the figures that support the porphyry copper interpretation.
Gold entered the picture through sample ESR006492, which returned 1.3 g/t Au alongside 22.6 ppm Ag and 45.61% Cu. Two previously reported selected rock-chip specimens — ESR006095 at 60.34% Cu and ESR006491 at 33.22% Cu — also returned extremely high copper values, but again, these are selected specimens collected specifically from visible mineralisation and should not be interpreted as indicative of average grade across the area.
The absence of gold in earlier assay batches may reflect mineralisation zonation. The announcement notes that continued sampling across Laleno Dome may identify additional occurrences of gold in association with silver and copper, if this interpretation is correct.
Earlier surface sampling at Laleno Dome had already returned high-grade copper and nickel at Laleno Dome alongside silver and manganese showings, establishing the multi-element character of the system before petrographic analysis confirmed the porphyritic host rock.
| Sample ID | Host Rock / Sample Type | Cu (ppm / %) | Au (g/t) | Ag (ppm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ESR006494 | Weathered altered porphyritic rock (rock-chip composite) | 6,561 ppm / 0.66% | 0.07 | 1.8 |
| ESR006498 | Weathered altered porphyritic rock (rock-chip composite) | 5,334 ppm / 0.53% | 0.17 | 1.4 |
| ESR006492 | Malachite nodules, Noni Formation (composite)* | 45.61% | 1.3 | 22.6 |
| ESR006491 | Weathered silicified ultramafic rock (selected rock-chip specimen)* | 33.22% | 0.08 | 3.6 |
| ESR006095 | Oxidised massive sulphide — source uncertain (selected rock-chip specimen)* | 60.34% | <0.01 | 182 |
*Selected rock-chip specimens are collected from visibly mineralised material and are not representative of the grade of the broader outcrop.
What is a porphyry copper-gold system — and why does it matter?
Porphyry copper-gold systems form when magma intrudes into the shallow crust. As the magma cools, it releases hot, mineralising fluids that flow outward into the surrounding rock, depositing copper and gold along the way. The intrusive body itself often carries disseminated copper minerals, while the surrounding rocks may be threaded with copper-bearing veins.
These systems matter because they are the world’s largest source of copper, and many carry significant gold credits alongside the copper. The petrographic analysis at Laleno Dome has confirmed the textbook signature of this deposit style: hydrothermally altered porphyritic diorite/microdiorite with chlorite-sericite replacement, quartz-carbonate veinlets, silica flooding, and disseminated pyrite.
Estrella now has three lines of geological evidence pointing toward an intrusion-related copper-gold system at Laleno Dome:
- Copper mineralisation confirmed within hydrothermally altered porphyritic diorite/microdiorite through petrographic analysis of polished thin-sections.
- “G-vein” quartz stockwork with copper mineralisation in ultramafic country rock approximately 3km south of the main porphyritic outcrop, consistent with hydrothermal fluid pathways from a porphyry source.
- Copper mineralisation in the surrounding Noni Formation sedimentary rock, potentially explained by hydrothermal impregnation from the same source, though a sedimentary copper origin has not been ruled out and further work is required.

What comes next for Estrella
The company has several near-term work programmes advancing across its Timor-Leste portfolio.
A regional airborne Magneto-Telluric and Magnetic survey is scheduled to commence in October 2026, with results expected before year-end. Equipment mobilisation is underway. The survey is anticipated to help define additional drill targets and assist in determining the sub-surface extent of the intrusive bodies identified at Laleno Dome.
Drilling at priority Laleno Dome targets is pending Timor-Leste Government approval. The company has completed ground geophysics surveys and additional site preparation, including community consultation, but has not indicated when that approval may be received.
Separately, planning is advancing for a 4,000m combined RC and diamond drilling programme at the Sagadate high-grade limestone project, subject to approvals.
On the Ira Miri manganese front, export approval documentation has been lodged with the Government of Timor-Leste, and preferred customers have been identified. Execution of a sales agreement is conditional on receipt of that approval. No indication has been given on timing.
The Ira Miri manganese inventory has been independently confirmed at 27,371 tonnes, with export approval documentation now lodged and preferred customers already identified as Estrella works toward a binding sales agreement.
Upcoming catalysts to watch across the portfolio include:
- Regional airborne MT and Magnetic survey commencing October 2026, results expected before year-end
- Laleno Dome drilling programme (pending Timor-Leste Government approval)
- Sagadate limestone drilling programme — 4,000m RC and diamond (subject to approvals)
- Ira Miri manganese export approval and binding sales agreement execution
The evolving picture at Laleno Dome, with copper now confirmed in porphyritic intrusive rock and gold added to the results, positions Estrella’s Timor-Leste portfolio as a genuinely multi-commodity story — though significant additional work, including drilling, will be required to test the scale and continuity of what has been identified.
