Eclipse Metals Locks in 17-Hole Drill Program to Grow 208 Mt Greenland Rare Earth Project
Key Takeaways
- Eclipse Metals has contracted a 17-hole, 2,355-metre diamond drilling program at its 100%-owned Ivigtût–Grønnedal Project in South Greenland, scheduled to commence October 2026.
- The 2025 campaign more than doubled the Grønnedal Mineral Resource from 89 Mt to 208 Mt at 0.72% TREO, and this next program targets further conversion of the 202 Mt Inferred inventory to the higher-confidence Indicated category.
- The project contains 1.505 Mt of contained TREO, including approximately 456,000 tonnes of the magnet rare earths Nd2O3 and Pr2O3 — the materials most critical to EV motors, wind turbines, and defence systems.
- The current resource footprint of roughly 500m x 400m sits within a carbonatite complex mapped over approximately 5km x 1.2km, leaving substantial strike and depth extensions untested by drilling.
- Grønnedal also hosts a separate 208 Mt strontium oxide resource at 1.43% SrO and an additional Hf-Ga-Y Inferred Resource of 4.87 Mt, broadening the project's commodity exposure beyond rare earths.
Diamond drilling locked in at Eclipse Metals’ 208 Mt Greenland rare earth project
Eclipse Metals (ASX: EPM) has entered into an agreement for a strategic 17-hole, 2,355-metre diamond drilling program at its 100%-owned Ivigtût–Grønnedal Project in South Greenland, with commencement scheduled for October 2026, subject to final mobilisation and regulatory requirements.
The program builds directly on the 2025 drilling campaign that expanded the Grønnedal Mineral Resource from 89 Mt to 208 Mt at 0.72% TREO, establishing its first Indicated component. The project holds an estimated 1.505 Mt of contained TREO, including approximately 456,000 tonnes of Nd2O3 and Pr2O3 — the magnet rare earths most in demand globally.

Q2 FY27 drilling program — what Eclipse is targeting and why it matters
From 89 Mt to 208 Mt — building on the 2025 campaign
Last year’s drilling campaign was a material step forward for the project. Results supported a resource expansion from 89 Mt to 208 Mt at 0.72% TREO and delivered the first Indicated classification within what had previously been an entirely Inferred inventory. The new program is designed to build upon that foundation.
Infill and step-out — a two-pronged drilling strategy
The upcoming campaign operates on two fronts simultaneously. Infill holes will test geological and grade continuity within selected parts of the 202 Mt Inferred inventory for potential conversion to the higher-confidence Indicated category, while step-out holes will test whether mineralisation extends beyond the current resource limits.
Key program parameters include:
- Individual hole depths ranging from 65 metres to 200 metres
- Current resource footprint: approximately 500m x 400m within a carbonatite complex mapped over approximately 5km (E-W) x 1.2km (N-S)
- The wider system remains lightly drill tested
- Mineralisation is open along strike and at depth
Any increase in tonnage or change in classification will depend on drilling results and assessment by the Competent Person in accordance with the JORC Code — resource conversion is not guaranteed.
Carl Popal, Executive Chairman, Eclipse Metals
“The previous drilling campaign expanded the Grønnedal Mineral Resource from 89 million tonnes to 208 million tonnes and established its first Indicated component. This next program is designed to increase confidence in selected parts of the large Inferred inventory while testing mineralisation beyond the current resource limits.
“The current resource occupies only part of the mapped carbonatite system. Our strategic 17-hole program will focus on the areas where drilling can most effectively strengthen geological confidence and test the potential for further resource growth.
“Grønnedal combines substantial scale, magnet rare earth exposure and a strategic South Greenland location at a time of heightened international focus on Greenland and secure Western critical-mineral supply chains. The new drilling will provide important geological, mineralogical and metallurgical data to support future technical and economic studies.”
Why rare earth resources in Greenland are attracting global attention
Rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of metals essential to modern technology and clean energy infrastructure. Among them, neodymium and praseodymium oxides (Nd2O3 and Pr2O3) are particularly sought after because they are the primary ingredients in the permanent magnets used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, defence systems, and robotics. Without a reliable supply of these materials, the transition to clean energy and advanced defence capabilities stalls.
Grønnedal also contains dysprosium and terbium oxides — both used in high-performance permanent magnets that must operate under extreme heat, such as those found in EV motors and military equipment.
The strategic dimension is straightforward: China currently dominates global REE production and processing, and Western governments are actively seeking to build alternative supply chains. Greenland has emerged as a priority jurisdiction in that effort, with Europe and North America both looking to the island’s geology as a potential counterweight to Chinese supply concentration.
The Grønnedal project sits near Ivigtût, historically the world’s principal source of cryolite used in aluminium production. The area benefits from established infrastructure and nearby deep-water port access — a logistical advantage that matters when you are contemplating future development in a remote location.

Resource snapshot and what’s next for Eclipse Metals
Grønnedal resource at a glance
The Grønnedal Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE) is reported at a 2,000 ppm TREO cut-off. The table below summarises the key figures from Appendix A of the announcement:
| Classification | Tonnage (Mt) | TREO Grade (ppm) | Contained TREO (Kt) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indicated | 6 | 7,139 | 40 |
| Inferred | 202 | 7,242 | 1,465 |
| Total | 208 | 7,239 | 1,505 |
Beyond the REE resource, the project also hosts a separate SrO (strontium oxide) resource of 208 Mt at 1.43% SrO, containing 2,968 Kt of contained SrO, and a separate Ivigtût Hf-Ga-Y Inferred Mineral Resource of 4.87 Mt — adding further inventory to the broader project footprint.
Immediate next steps
The company has outlined the following work programme, drawn directly from the announcement:
- Complete mobilisation and regulatory preparations and commence the 17-hole diamond drilling program
- Progress the next-stage beneficiation programme, including flotation, selective regrind, gangue rejection, and hydrometallurgical testing
- Complete further mineralogical characterisation and confirm the principal REE-bearing mineral phases
- Integrate drilling, assays, mapping, geophysics, mineralogy, and metallurgy into the geological and development models
- Assess whether the integrated results support an updated Mineral Resource and future technical and economic studies
- Report material drilling and testwork results in accordance with ASX requirements
Advancing the Indicated classification within the resource — if drilling results support it — would strengthen the geological basis for mine planning and any future feasibility work. That is the central prize this program is chasing.
