Perpetual Resources Drills Deeper at Igrejinha to Test Fresh Lithium Pegmatite
Key Takeaways
- Perpetual Resources has engaged ServDrill Brazil for an approximately 1,500m diamond drilling program at Igrejinha, with mobilisation and commencement targeted for September 2026.
- Two priority prospects — Mauricio and Morro Grande — have been selected based on surface and shallow drill evidence, including an interpreted pegmatite with at least 350m of strike at Mauricio and confirmed pegmatite continuation below surface at Morro Grande.
- Morro Grande has returned spodumene-like pseudomorphs, UV fluorescence consistent with spodumene, and anomalous Cs, Ta, Sn and W pathfinder elements — the diagnostic LCT pegmatite fertility signature — from 2025 RC drilling.
- The modest 2025 RC grades are attributed to intense tropical weathering of near-surface material, not the underlying pegmatite system; diamond core will provide the first assay data from fresh rock at depth.
- The technical program is led by Iran Zan do Vale, a geologist with more than 15 years of experience including over a decade at Sigma Lithium's Grota do Cirilo operations in the same Araçuaí Pegmatite District.
Diamond drilling set to test priority lithium targets at Igrejinha
Perpetual Resources (ASX: PEC) has engaged Brazilian drilling contractor ServDrill Brazil to undertake an approximately 1,500m diamond drilling program at its Igrejinha Lithium Project in the Araçuaí Pegmatite District of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Mobilisation and commencement of drilling are expected in September 2026, targeting two priority prospects: Mauricio and Morro Grande. The company is earning up to 90% exploration rights at Igrejinha.
This program follows the company’s maiden RC campaign completed in 2025 and represents a deliberate technical step-up in the exploration sequence, moving from reconnaissance drilling of near-surface material to continuous core extraction at depth.

Why diamond drilling — and why now
The shift from RC to diamond drilling is a direct response to what the 2025 campaign did and did not deliver. RC drilling is effective for initial target definition, but diamond core provides something RC cannot: an uninterrupted, oriented rock column from surface to the target depth, capturing the geometry and mineralogy of the pegmatite system in detail.
What the 2025 RC campaign revealed
The 2025 RC program returned generally modest lithium grades, but this outcome is consistent with what the geology would predict. Much of that drilling tested strongly weathered near-surface material, where lithium is relatively mobile and can be progressively leached in tropical weathering environments. The grades within the weathered profile are therefore not considered representative of the underlying pegmatite. The campaign nonetheless achieved its purpose: it materially improved Perpetual’s geological model and identified Mauricio and Morro Grande as the priority targets warranting deeper investigation.
The maiden RC campaign at Igrejinha returned data that materially upgraded the geological model despite the modest near-surface grades, with the intensely weathered surface profile masking the system’s deeper potential and redirecting targeting toward the two priority prospects now entering diamond drilling.
What diamond core unlocks
Continuous diamond drill core will enable the geological team to assess a set of parameters that RC simply cannot resolve:
- Pegmatite contacts, thickness and geometry
- Structural orientation and continuity
- Internal pegmatite zonation
- Mineralogical variations within individual pegmatite bodies
- Distribution and orientation of spodumene and other lithium-bearing minerals
- Geological controls on lithium mineralisation
LCT pegmatites (lithium-caesium-tantalum pegmatites) are a specific class of granite-derived rock body that hosts the world’s primary hard-rock lithium deposits, with spodumene being the key lithium-bearing mineral. The Araçuaí Pegmatite District in Minas Gerais is one of the most significant LCT pegmatite provinces globally, hosting Sigma Lithium’s producing Grota do Cirilo operations nearby. Understanding the three-dimensional architecture of a pegmatite system at depth is what separates early-stage target generation from a properly tested resource.
Mauricio and Morro Grande — what the targets look like
Both prospects have been prioritised based on surface and shallow drill evidence. The table below summarises the key characteristics of each.
| Prospect | Key Evidence | Strike Extent | Drilling Objective |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mauricio | Trenching has delineated an interpreted pegmatite body with observed apparent thicknesses of approximately 2m to 11m | At least 350m | Test continuity, geometry and thickness along strike and beneath the weathered surface profile |
| Morro Grande | 2025 RC drilling confirmed pegmatite continuation below surface; spodumene-like pseudomorphs and ghost crystals identified; strongly anomalous Cs, Ta, Sn and W from 2025 RC; selected fragments displayed UV fluorescence consistent with spodumene | Confirmed below surface | Test the primary pegmatite system beneath the weathered zone and assess geometry and primary lithium mineralisation at depth |
At Morro Grande, recent field observations included spodumene-like pseudomorphs with the original prismatic crystal habit locally preserved despite partial to complete replacement by kaolinite and associated clay minerals. Selected fragments also displayed moderate to strong pinkish-orange fluorescence under 365nm long-wave UV light, a response considered consistent with spodumene.
The high-grade lithium and caesium results recorded across Perpetual’s Brazil program reinforce the diagnostic value of the anomalous Cs, Ta, Sn and W signatures identified at Morro Grande, as elevated pathfinder element concentrations are a recognised indicator of LCT pegmatite fertility at depth.
Important cautionary note: UV fluorescence and visual mineral abundance estimates are qualitative field observations only. As stated in the announcement: visual estimates of mineral abundance should never be considered a proxy or substitute for laboratory analyses where concentrations or grades are the factor of principal economic interest. Visual estimates also potentially provide no information regarding impurities or deleterious physical properties relevant to valuations. Primary lithium grades will be determined from drill core obtained from the planned diamond drilling program.
Experience in the field — team and contractor
Two key engagements underpin confidence in the execution quality of this program.
Iran Zan do Vale (FAusIMM, MAIG, PR CBRR) brings more than 15 years of mineral exploration and mine development experience and extensive first-hand knowledge of the Araçuaí Pegmatite District, including more than a decade with Sigma Lithium at its Grota do Cirilo operations in Minas Gerais. His scope covers drill targeting, geological and structural interpretation, and ongoing refinement of the Igrejinha 3D geological model. Mr Zan recently completed a field review of both the Mauricio and Morro Grande prospects.
ServDrill Brazil previously completed Perpetual’s 2025 RC drilling campaign at Igrejinha and holds extensive operating experience within Brazil’s Lithium Valley, including drilling campaigns for major lithium explorers and developers in the region. The contractor’s continuity across both programs provides an operational advantage as Perpetual moves into diamond drilling.
Julian Babarczy, Executive Chairman
“The 2025 drilling confirmed a mineralised pegmatite system beneath Igrejinha and gave our technical team the geological information needed to substantially refine the model and identify the priority targets for this next phase.
“The objective now is straightforward: to drill beneath the intensely weathered profile and test the pegmatite system with continuous diamond core. At Mauricio we have an interpreted pegmatite extending for at least 350 metres of strike, while recent field observations at Morro Grande provide further support for testing the system at depth.
“With ServDrill engaged and approximately 1,500 metres of drilling planned, we are looking forward to getting the program underway in September.”

What comes next
Perpetual is currently finalising drill-hole locations and site preparations ahead of ServDrill’s mobilisation. The sequenced next steps are:
- Mobilisation of ServDrill to Igrejinha during September 2026
- Commencement of diamond drilling at Mauricio and Morro Grande
- Systematic geological and structural logging of drill core
- Sampling and progressive submission of mineralised and prospective intervals for laboratory analysis
- Ongoing refinement of the Igrejinha geological model as drilling progresses
Each of these steps builds toward the dataset that matters most: assay results from fresh pegmatite at depth. Those results will be the first real test of whether the Igrejinha system carries economic lithium grades below the weathered profile. Perpetual has confirmed it will provide shareholder updates as drilling progresses, with assay results to be reported as they become available.
